And almost immediately, the temptation is to run straight for the fun part: the tile, the paint chips, the endless scroll of beautiful rooms that look nothing like yours yet.
I understand that instinct completely. Inspiration feels like progress. But after years of walking families through renovations, I've come to believe that the most important work of any project happens well before the first pretty decision. It happens in a quieter conversation, the one you have with yourself, about how you actually want to live. Get that part right, and every choice that follows gets easier. Skip it, and you can end up with a gorgeous room that still doesn't feel like home.
